familybike-CSSSummer is finally in full swing, and there are some things you might want to keep in mind for your family’s activities. This is a time of relaxed schedules (school is out) and increased recreational activities.

At Gainesville Dental Associates in Gainesville, Florida, Dr. Manveen Atwal, DDS and our team have some tips to share so that your summer plans roll along smoothly and safety.

Daily Care: First, even though school is out and the kids (or grandkids) are home, now is not the time to relax their oral health care. Make sure they still floss at least once a day, and brush at least twice, to make sure their teeth and gums remain in tip-top shape. It is easy for them to get distracted by vacation hours and the change in their routine. To help them stay in the healthy mode, give them a new toothbrush to use that will be fun to use. If you are traveling, make sure they pack their toothbrush and toothpaste for the road (or camp).

Kitchen Aid: If the kids (or grandkids) are at home all day, they will want to snack. Be sure to keep healthy options in the fridge and on the table. This includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and if you keep them already clean and ready to eat, they won’t miss the chips and Twinkies. Also, hydrating water within reach will keep them energized longer than soda.

Sports: If your kids are adding sports to their schedule, check to see if a sports guard might help protect their pearly whites. If there is a dental emergency and a permanent tooth is knocked-out, keep the tooth in a sealed container of milk, salt water, or an emergency tooth preservation kit–until you can be seen by our dentist, right away.

Vacation: Before you head out for road trips or flights, be sure to pack a travel emergency kit in case there are any dental problems along the way.

Checkups: As we mentioned in a previous blog, summer is also the ideal time for dental checkups and cleanings before the end-of-the-year rush, so take advantage of the out-of-school schedule and get this visit taken care of!
