Have you ever wondered why your dental examination is so important to your oral health? Your dental team is here to keep you healthy, by helping you care for your teeth and gums (prevention) and detecting potential problems while they are still small and easily and affordably treated. Typically, your checkup involves two parts–examining your mouth and cleaning your teeth and gums.

–First, we will look for cavities and find out where plaque and tartar may be accumulating. Plaque—a sticky bacterial film you can feel when you run your tongue along your teeth—needs to be removed every day or it will mineralize and require professional dental tools to remove. If tartar is allowed to build up and you skip your dental cleanings, it will eventually cause tooth decay and gum disease.

–Your gum health will also be evaluated to make sure that they are healthy and correctly spaced around the teeth (spaces between teeth and gums will increase when gum disease is present). Your smile will also be checked for any abnormal conditions and we will review treatment options based on the dental conditions we discover.

–Next, we will clean your teeth and gums. Using scaling tools, we remove tartar buildup from your teeth and gumline. To remove stains on the teeth, they will be polished with a gritty paste after scaling. Once the teeth are clean we will floss to remove any debris trapped between the teeth and the gumline, and review any brushing and flossing techniques you may need to help you with your at-home dental care.

Besides your six month dental exams, we recommend that you keep your smile healthy and problem-free with daily oral care. Brush your teeth at least two times a day for two minutes each time, floss your teeth and gums at least once a day, and rinse with a plaque-reducing mouthwash once daily.
